Updated building codes bring up need for Ordinance or Law coverage

Many think Ordinance or Law coverage is only necessary for older homes that may be required to be updated to current building codes. However, that is not necessarily the case.

Research in home safety and building construction is a rapidly growing field resulting in ever changing building codes. As a result, homes that are less than 10 years old may be subject to increased reconstruction costs related to meeting more current building codes.

Regardless of the age of the home, adding or increasing the limit for Ordinance or Law coverage is an important addition that can help absorb the extra costs of structural work, roofing, electrical, plumbing, etc., that may be needed to bring a home “up to code” after a loss. Having this discussion with an insured could not only save them money in the long run, but also protect your agency from a potential errors and omissions situation.
