New South Carolina fingerprint and background check requirements

Effective Jan. 1, 2017, the state of South Carolina will require fingerprints for all resident producers, including producers with limited lines authority.

Applicants must submit a complete set of fingerprints to the director or his designee before a license is issued or renewed permitting him/her to act as a resident producer. The applicant will also be required to undergo a state criminal records check by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and a national criminal records check by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Both records checks will be supported by fingerprints. The fingerprints must be certified by a law enforcement officer authorized by SLED.

The results of the records checks must be reported to the South Carolina Department of Insurance, and applicants will be responsible for all associated costs.

SLED has contracted with IdentoGo by MorphoTrust to conduct the fingerprinting and criminal history background checks. Resident producers must schedule an appointment with IdentoGo to have fingerprints processed. You can schedule an appointment at identogo.com. If you are unable to schedule an appointment prior to your birth month, you should contact the South Carolina Department of Insurance immediately.
