Easy as 1-2-3: Three points of contact rule helps prevent falls
Taking preventive action to avert falls can be as simple as counting to three. Encourage your workers’ compensation policyholders to educate their employees on the three points of contact rule.
The three points of contact rule utilizes a combination of either two feet and one hand or two hands and one foot connected to the object or equipment at all times.
Share these guidelines with policyholders on how to help prevent falls in their workplace:
- Pay attention to hand and foot placement and keep three of them in contact with ladders, forklifts, equipment or vehicles at all times.
- Use provided hand holds and ensure the entire front half of your foot is placed on a step; do not grasp non-approved parts of equipment or only place the tip of your shoe on a step, as this increases chances of slipping.
- Use proper footwear for support and traction and face the equipment when you enter or exit.
- Some equipment may require specialized training, such as proper mounting and dismounting, and it’s important to know the locations of stairs and ladders as well as handles and bars for any gripping and climbing.
- Regular inspections of equipment should be performed.
- Know your surroundings and take note of any potentially hazardous elements, such as slippery surfaces, uneven ground and traffic patterns.
- Verify equipment is clear of mud, grease or any other debris to ensure three points of contact can be maintained.
