Keep your policyholders safe with these winter weather tips
Winter isn’t far off, and while the season brings beautiful blankets of snow, cold temperatures and ice also bring hazards, including dangerous walkways.
Remind your policyholders these conditions can cause slips, trips and falls in their workplace. These injuries can be serious, but policyholders can minimize risks by following these tips:
- Walk like a penguin: No animal handles winter better than penguins. To walk like a penguin, slightly bend your knees with feet spread shoulder-width apart and lean forward to lower and increase your center of gravity.
- Select proper footwear: Rubber soles are best for avoiding slips – save the leather soles or high heels for changing into later. Remember to leave room for thick socks when selecting boots and be mindful of the lining so the fabric keeps your feet warm and dry. Ice cleats are another option for more traction in snow and ice.
- Pay special attention when getting in and out of your car: Keep rock salt or cat litter in your vehicle to help give you a little extra leverage on ice.
- Walk in designated walkways.
- Keep hands and arms free to help with balance.
- Look up and focus on where you’re going: Don’t use your cellphone or multi-task while walking in hazardous conditions.
