Motorists in the community
On Oct. 27, Team Motorists participated in the 2017 Light the Night walk with the Central Ohio chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. A team of associates and their friends and families came together to raise money, awareness and support for those fighting blood cancers.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) “exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients,” and is an organization that hits home for many associates. Each member of Team Motorists had a personal reason to participate. Many associates walked in memory of loved ones lost, and one associate walked as a survivor. Emily Downin, a Human Resources associate, shared her story:
“At age three, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. Children’s Hospital quickly became my new home as I had appointments three to five days a week. As a toddler, I really had no context of how ‘bad’ things were. Everyone who visited me in the hospital has always told me that I was smiling and laughing during that time. I had many blood transfusions, spinal taps and went through chemotherapy. On Sept. 22, 1998, I had my last dose of chemotherapy. It was also my sixth birthday! I am proud to say that I’m now a cancer survivor of 19 years, a mother of two beautiful girls and engaged to the love of my life.”
